Vespa Custom "ESC Project" for SIP Scootershop

Received a nice email from the lovely folk at SIP last week telling me all about their recently finished Vespa Custom ESC Project built for them by St Petersburg based outfit, Butcher Garage...

"Here at BUTCHER GARAGE, we have been SIP Scootershop customers since day one. It is no secret, that in Russia, it is often not easy to get hold of things - however for Vespa parts, SIP Scootershop makes life very easy for us. We call the almost 1000 page SIP catalogue "the Bible" in our workshop, only half joking.

Due to this long and close collaboration, it was always our dream to work together on a custom project. At the moment, we particularly like "scrambler" modifications, which are also a big trend in the motorbike sector. Every motorbike manufacturer now has a scrambler model in the portfolio. We started to investigate whether such a modification would be possible with a classic Vespa.."

You can read the full story of this special build on the SIP blog here and view their full photo album here I see also that ScooterNova magazine issue 7 (published today) features an in depth lowdown on the scrambler as you can see below..

SIP have even commissioned a special T-shirt to mark their ESC scooter which is available to buy in their online store here

I'll be visiting SIP Scootershop for their upcoming open day on Saturday May 5th in Landsberg, Bavaria, where the Vespa Custom ESC Project will be on display - looking forward to getting a closer look and some photos of course..

Scooter rarities

When visiting Bicester Heritage last Sunday for their Sunday Scramble, see previous post I spotted this pair of rare Skootamotas. An early scooter built as I understand by Gilbert Campling Ltd and sold/advertised as the ABC Skootamota, eventually ceasing production in 1922.

The Skootamota would struggle on today's roads with a top speed of 15mph/24kmh but 100 years ago in the early 20th Century was probably a fun and pleasantly sedate form of transport for the quieter roads of the time in the UK and the much reduced volume of traffic than we have now.

Also on display and pictured below were a pair of French manufactured Velosolex mopeds or Solex as they were more commonly known and mass produced between 1946 - 1988. These used the concept of a motor with roller resting on the front wheel of a bicycle and were very popular with school children, students and factory workers due to them being light and very economical to run.

All in all a great day out and interesting to stumble upon these unusual beasts..

Retrospective Scooters / The London Scooter Bodyshop Open Day - 21.4.18

Spent Saturday at Retrospective's & The London Scooter Bodyshop's joint open day. Blessed with sunny late April weather; the sun attracted riders and visitors alike...

There were some tasty scoots in attendance; those catching my eye and camera lens being some very nice original paint series 1,2 & 3 Lambrettas, as well as the above Vega and this lovely Piaggio pair below...

..also some excellent food & drink offerings with the next door Wildcard Brewery providing craft beers, along with jerk chicken, BBQ pork and decent coffee being available, ensured it all added up to a great day out - thanks to Niall & Dave and everyone else involved with organising the open day ; )

Check out the other 35mm film shots I took here plus a couple of iPhone shots.

Sunday Scramble

Sunday Scramble

Visited Bicester Heritage on the weekend for their 'Sunday Scramble' which was complemented by the good weather and subsequent healthy turn out of classics and visitors. There were a few of the usual suspects you see at this kind of event - Jaguar E-Types, Aston Martins, Austin Healeys but also some pretty rare attendees..

Sunday Scramble

I purposefully didn't take my film camera along but couldn't resist snapping away with my iPhone. Of the less familiar sights there which caught my attention this lovely example above now operating as a tea van was very pleasing to look at and was nice to see an autobahn eating 3 litre Opel Monza.. but my fave spot of the day had to be this beautiful Zagato styled Lancia Fulvia...

Sunday Scramble

You can see the rest of the phone shots I took here and see the 35mm film shots I took at the Spring 2016 Sunday Scramble here

SIP Flagship Store Landsberg - Tour

Am definitely looking forward to re-visiting SIP Scootershop for their annual open day this year being held on Saturday May 5th.

Have just noticed they have recorded a short film/tour of their new HQ in Landsberg, Bavaria.

Il Vespista - Giorgio Bettinelli: I primi 110 000 km

A collective of international filmmakers are endeavouring to make a film in honour of epic Vespa traveller Giorgio Bettinelli and his exploits..

"Giorgio Bettinelli observed the whole world from a rather unique perspective: behind the handlebars of a Vespa.

His book “On a Vespa Beyond the Horizon” is now available in an e-book version, compatible with all devices (tablets, smartphones, computers), and can be comfortably read...on the road!

The e-book will be available from March 25th, 2018, with proceeds funding the short film Il Vespista, inspired by the life of Giorgio Bettinelli."

A series of photo exhibitions are being held in Portugal and Italy during April and May containing images from Giorgio's first three journeys with proceeds going towards the film..

Read more here and to help this film get made you can contribute via crowdfunding campaign here

Renewed ScooterNova subscription

Just got around to renewing my annual subscription to ScooterNova magazine and can now look forward again to 6 issues of quality, informed articles and photography on Vespa, Lambretta plus other scooter marques, customs, ingenious builds, scooter travels, historic features and more..

Retrospective Scooters have just launched their new website designed by George Schon with me contributing some film photography, which has kept me busy the last couple of months, see previous post

Not all featured photography is mine but a fair amount is, George is also pretty good with a camera; some of his digital shots also appearing. Anyway check out the new site, there's a lot to see and it looks great!

I'll be calling by Retrospective Scooters/The London Scooter Bodyshop open day this coming Saturday..

Retrospective Scooters & The London Scooter Bodyshop - new website and open day

Photographing for new Retrospective Scooters website

Photo: Aaron James

Spent Saturday as a 'working' day off doing some film photography which I've been doing on and off since beginning of February for Retrospective Scooters' new website, which is due to go live in a couple of weeks or so..

Built and put together by graphic designer (and customer), George Schon the new website is a great looking, fresh take on the UK's most renown classic scooter dealer - the place for all your classic Vespa & Lambretta needs, be they repairs, maintenance, upgrades, crash repairs or restoration. The new website goes a lot further and more in depth than the current incarnation; expanding on the services provided by Retrospective and their partner The London Scooter Bodyshop, both housed in the same building in Wathamstow, London - providing a genuine high quality one-stop scooter shop.

Photo: © Paul Hart - All rights reserved. Retrospective workshop - Feb 2018

As well as explaining how best to maintain and improve your pride and joy, the new website has plenty of 'eye candy'; showing examples of their immaculately restored scooters on the 'Great Builds' page (including this lovely 1964 Vespa 90 and beautiful 1966 Vespa 90SS I recently photographed on 35mm film for the new site), plus a constantly updated 'For Sale' page with detailed shots of bikes currently available from the showroom.

Photo: © Paul Hart - All rights reserved. Restored Vespa 90SS - March 2018

There is also an exciting, ground breaking new project currently under development and nearing completion at Retrospective - with all to be revealed in the near future..

Retrospective Scooters and The London Scooter Bodyshop will be hosting an open day on Saturday 21st April from 1pm-6pm...

Sounds will be spun by the attendant DJs with lunch available to buy from the visiting and craft beer from located next door to Retrospective and London Scooter Bodyshop. If you're riding and abstaining from alcohol the local coffee Ape will also be putting in an appearance. Lastly Royal Alloy will be there to mark Retrospective becoming a new dealer for their range.

Keep your eyes peeled for Retrospective's new website - I'll post a link in the coming weeks when it's launched..

Out and about yesterday I bumped into this very nice E Type - a 4.2 litre fixed head coupe in the rarely seen factory willow green colour..

Taken on iPhone, would have preferred to take this properly on my film camera but time didn't allow. See my 35mm film album of classic cars here

Although a certified fan of classic, geared vespas - I can appreciate quality photography in all its forms; even if featuring the modern automatic descendant of the original vespa. These two excellent photographs being great examples..
